The first casinos in Deadwood, South Dakota opened on November 1, 1989. Local regulations require that all of the buildings in the downtown section to conform with the city’s authentic 1880’sarchitecture. Deadwood is famous for being the home of James Butler Hickok, who was better known as Wild Bill Hickok. He was shot to death while playing cards in the No. 10 Saloon. The hand Wild Bill held atthe time he was shot was two pairs: black aces and black eights, and that hand is now commonly referred to as a “dead man’s hand.” Wild Bill is buried in the local cemetery along with CalamityJane, who was a well-known companion to Wild Bill. The old No. 10 Saloon is still operating today and you can gamble in the same spot where old Wild Bill met his demise!
